The Power of Religious Cults

Why are cult leaders so powerful in controlling their members? Why are cult members so vulnerable to these tactics? Assign students to answer these and other essential questions for critical thinking. To help your students, ProQuest has created a new BookCart learning activity, "Religious Cults--What makes them tick?"

SIRS Discoverer
Are Vegetarian Diets OK for Students?

November is National Vegetarian Awareness Month. For much of the world, vegetarianism is largely a matter of economics: Meat costs more than beans or rice, so meat becomes a special-occasion dish (if it's eaten at all).

Vegetables: It's What's For Dinner

Assign students to learn more about the benefits and potential problems of choosing a vegan lifestyle. Let SIRS Discoverer serve up all the resources you'll need to succeed.

Aviation History Month & Space Exploration

The Wright Bothers are widely credited with making the first sustained, controlled, powered heavier-than-air manned flight at Kill Devil Hills, NC. What will the next 50 years of spaceflight bring, and what new technologies will have to be developed to explore the new frontier of space?

SIRS Decades
Veterans Day

Veterans Day in the U.S. commemorates veterans and those who were killed in all wars since World War I. It is especially appropriate this year, when the U.S. and its allies are still fighting and dying in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Veterans Day Salute

To honor Veterans Day and the World War I Armistice that initiated it, assign students to research some aspect of World War I -- we've provided several SIRS Decades topics to get you started.

Appreciating Native American History

American history is replete with examples of how Native Americans were taken advantage of by westward bound settlers and the U.S. government.

Native American History

Assign students to select and study one aspect of Native American reservation life, such as health, education, economics, or culture. Assign students a written report of at least 150 words (or a presentation of at least seven slides) that cites at least three sources, both online and off.

Armistice Day: The War to End All Wars?

Armistice Day commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany that ended the hostilities on the Western Front in Europe in World War I. Symbolically, the armistice took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, and was thought to celebrate the end of a "war to end all wars."

World War I

ProQuest has created a BookCart learning activity to honor Veterans Day: "World War I--Causes and Consequences." Teachers or librarians can copy and adapt this BookCart model and hundreds of other ProQuest models from our Carts collection.

Mickey Mouse's Birthday

Eighty years ago on November 18, Steamboat Willie premiered in movie theaters. The animated movie with sound featured a cartoon character named Mickey Mouse. Mickey Mouse and the movie were the first of many Walt Disney characters and animated movies to follow, and was an immediate hit.

We've created a BookCart learning activity for your students to use: "Disney Animated Movies and Characters." This Cart includes three models of essential questions for critical thinking that you can assign to students.

Trickle-Down Economics?

The current financial crisis in the U.S. and the world has brought increasing doubts about the economic policy practiced by the Republican administration and Congress during the last eight years--Reaganomics.

Wall Street Meltdown 2008

What evidence is there that Reaganomics works? What evidence is there that Reaganomics has not worked over the last eight years? What alternative economic theory can be implemented today that will bring greater benefits to and expand the middle class? Let Platinum help students answer these timely questions.

SIRS Spotlights + Challenge Quests
National American Indian Heritage Month pays tribute to Native Americans' historical and contemporary achievements and revolutionary role in the development of American culture and society.

Our SIRS Spotlight of the Month promotes cultural understanding and honors Native Americans.

Not only is the 2008 presidential race a great time to become politically involved, but it's an opportunity to learn fresh political words.

Did you know that the word "ballot," the paper or card used to vote, comes from the Italian word "balla," meaning ball? Vote with your mouse at this month's SIRS Challenge Quests!

CultureGrams
Native American History & Culture

November is American Indian Heritage (Native American) Month. Despite the existence of hundreds of different tribes of Native Americans in North America, there evolved a unique and common culture that was based on respect for the Great Spirit and nature.

Native American History & Culture

Lead a class discussion about the relationships generally between Native Americans and white settlers in U.S. history. Ask the following essential questions for critical thinking: Was conflict inevitable? Why do people have trouble accepting others who are different? What could have been done to reduce the negative effects of conflict?

World Conflicts Today
Fall of the Taliban

November marks the seven-year anniversary of the fall of the Taliban. Test your knowledge of Afghani history with multiple-choice questions from World Conflicts Today.

Taliban Fighters

Which anti-Taliban Afghan commander was killed just days before the 9/11 attacks on the U.S.? The British and Russians struggled to increase their influence in Afghanistan. What is the name generally given to this earlier struggle? Which country's intelligence agency has traditionally supported the Taliban? Find out.

Economic Depression

The current financial crisis began with the bursting of the U.S. housing bubble and high default rates on "subprime" and adjustable rate mortgages (ARM). Since the late 1990s, declining lending standards, an increase in loan incentives, and a long-term trend of rising housing prices had encouraged borrowers to assume difficult mortgages.

Subprime Mortgages

Assign students to study some aspect of the Great Depression and the government's role in trying to hasten economic recovery. Students will want to learn how government involvement in future economies could help to prevent the conditions that lead to recessions and depressions.
