eLibrary CE: More Fall Updates
We hope you enjoyed the new, shorter update email newsletter in August. You'll get these shorter updates in the months between our larger, more robust offerings (see below!)
Last week (9/9), our team released several new updates to your subscription, including:
Embedded Reference Search: When viewing an eLibrary document, you can now double-click on any word in the document text. A pop-up will appear, displaying the dictionary definition, and a sound icon can be clicked to hear the word pronounced outloud.
Timeline Download: You'll find a new download function in our timeline creator/editor. This allows you to download the Flash that's created by our timeline tool, where it can be viewed locally on your school computers.
Search Widgets: Soon you'll be able to generate your very own
HTML search widget, which will make it possible to
embed a direct search of eLibrary within any webpage!
The search widget can be controlled to provide a simple
search, specific source type search, or a selectable source
type search. Plus, both a Facebook and iPhone gadget are only
weeks away. Details will arrive in your inbox in October!

School Lesson Plans & Activities
Librarian Activity to Support Teachers
The recession has caused school districts to reduce expenses. A major strategy being used by school boards is to postpone textbook purchases for several years or more. In a world of rapidly changing events and information, teaching and learning with even more obsolete textbooks is ineffective.
ProQuest solutions provide the teaching and learning tools to transition teachers from textbook learning and move to the future with inquiry-based learning and 21st-century skills powered by online reference solutions like eLibrary CE.
This month, help teachers address their reluctance to assign inquiry-based learning activities by exploring the teacher resources in our support activity and sharing them with your teachers.
Unlike traditional databases, ProQuest solutions empower both teachers and students to develop critical thinking and information literacy skills, and help teachers transition from textbook learning to inquiry-based learning. Find out more.

Librarian Tip: Share with Teachers
Librarians can help educators get to and use your embedded eLibrary Teacher Edition by creating a desktop shortcut.
When teachers logon from school or home, what you see is our default search screen, or the Student Edition. Teachers and librarians should always access and work with the Teacher Edition.
The Teacher Edition has all the functionality and content of the Student Edition but include the BookCart Administration functions that help educators access our BookCart Editor, My eLibrary, Timelines management, My List tool for exporting teacher-selected articles to a new BookCart, and Teacher Tools resources.
ProQuest has received requests from teachers and librarians who needed a hand in doing the Admin functions (listed above) because they were not aware that these functions resided only in the Teacher Edition.
Librarians can copy the URL for the Teacher Edition and email it to teachers so that they can create a desktop shortcut at school and at home. Select your version of eLibrary and the URL for the Teacher Edition from the list below:
eLibrary Teacher Edition
http://elibrary.bigchalk.com/teacher
eLibrary Curriculum Edition Teacher Edition
http://elibrary.bigchalk.com/curriculum/teacher
eLibrary Elementary Teacher Edition
http://elibrary.bigchalk.com/k6/teacher
eLibrary Science Teacher Edition
http://science.bigchalk.com/teacher
eLibrary Canada Teacher Edition
http://elibrary.bigchalk.com/ca/teacher
eLibrary CE Canada Teacher Edition
http://elibrary.bigchalk.com/ce/canada/teacher
You can copy/paste parts of the intro message above and include these as an intro to the steps listed below in your email to your teaching staff.
Option 1: You may retrieve our set of shortcuts (Windows download). Save this .zip file to your desktop, right-click it, then expand its contents to your desktop. Open the folder, then copy/paste the appropriate shortcut into an email to your teachers along with your message.
Option 2: Here's the procedure for creating a Windows shortcut to your Teacher Edition of eLibrary.
- Copy the appropriate URL for the Teacher Edition of your version of eLibrary (above).
- Minimize all other open programs to get a Desktop view.
- Right click an open space on the desktop and select New from the menu options.
- Click the Shortcut option.
- Right click the Dialogue box and select Paste to enter the Teacher Edition URL you copied.
- Click the Next button.
- Type "eLibrary (your version) Teacher" in the Dialogue box.
- Click Finish.

ProQuest Essentials | Editorial Content in Context
Your all-new eLibrary CE subscription contains more than 1,000 ProQuest Essentials, or "smart content" pages. Essentials highlight content from within eLibrary's 60 million documents, 5 million images, and 50,000 websites.
Essentials (video) are mapped to specific queries and appear as the first result. They're created by our editors based on the most popular queries and most studied subjects. This means what users need first, they see first—so they spend less time searching and more time learning.
Below is a short list of some of our back to school Essentials making their debut. Conduct a keyword search on each item, and the collection will appear at the top of the results.
- Apollo 11
- Galileo Galilei
- GPS Technology
- Insomnia
- International Space Station
- Johannes Kepler
- Lightning Rod
- Madagascar
- Magic Johnson
- Pacemaker
- Sally Ride
- Tiger Woods
- Women Inventors
- Zeppelins
To find all current ProQuest Essentials, click Publications and look under "ProQuest Essentials" in the alphabetical sorting.
