Preparing for Vancouver 2010

The IOC stood firm in their decision not to allow women's ski jumping at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. A group of female ski jumpers consequently launched a lawsuit against VANOC alleging violations of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but have they attacked the wrong organization? To search for information on this controversial topic, look for Women's Ski Jumping and limiting your search to Canadian Publications Only.

Take a moment to learn about the last Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. What were Team Canada's successes and failures? Who will be looking too for gold medal success in Vancouver? This time, let's try a Topic Search for Olympics. You can enter Olympics in the topic search field, or browse by Physical Education and Sports.   • British Columbia (host of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games) sometimes experiences a weather swing known as a "west coast special." Because of the quick temperature change, British Columbians can sometimes ski and golf in the same day!

  • Native legend tells of a mysterious monster known as the N'ha-a-itk, or "lake demon," who lives in the waters of Lake Okanagan. Today the monster is called Ogopogo, and sightings are reported every year.

  • The Victoria Bug Zoo houses 50 different species of insects and spiders and has the largest collection of tropical insects in North America.

  • British Columbia is sometimes called Hollywood North because, after New York and Los Angeles, it is the largest film and television production centre in North America.

  • The international environmental protection organization called Greenpeace was founded in Vancouver in 1971.
